Construction ERP for job costing, field work, and financial control
Construction teams need more than a final cost report. Odoo ERP can be evaluated across estimating, awarded work, purchasing, field time, equipment, subcontractors, change orders, billing, and accounting so project managers and finance work from the same job record. The practical design starts with the cost structure already used by the business. Estimated, committed, actual, billed, and forecast amounts need clear definitions before dashboards or custom development are approved.
Estimate and budget baseline
Map estimate lines, cost codes, labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, overhead, and approved scope into a project budget that can be compared with later commitments and actuals.
Purchasing and committed cost
Connect purchase orders and subcontract commitments to the right project before supplier invoices arrive, while keeping approval status, expected cost, receipts, and exceptions visible.
Field time, materials, and equipment
Test how supervisors capture labour, installed or consumed materials, equipment usage, expenses, photos, notes, and progress using the devices and approval flow the field team can maintain.
Change orders, billing, and forecast
Keep scope changes, customer approval, revised value, cost impact, billing status, holdbacks, and forecast-to-complete connected so margin movement can be explained before month-end.

Run each test on one finished job from last quarter. Use its real budget, purchase orders, crew hours and invoices. When Odoo reproduces the margin your controller already signed off, that workflow is ready for go-live.

Canadian construction details to settle before go-live
Each of these changes how invoicing, purchasing or vendor records are set up, so confirm them with your accountant or lawyer before data migration starts.
Statutory holdback on progress invoices
Alberta's Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act and Ontario's Construction Act both require the payer to retain a holdback of 10 per cent of the value of work supplied. The Odoo 20 documentation describes no dedicated holdback feature, so agree how each progress invoice shows the holdback, which account carries it and how the release is billed. Then run that cycle on a sample job.
GST/HST on the held amount
Under subsection 168(7) of the Excise Tax Act, tax on a construction holdback becomes payable on the earlier of the day it is paid and the day it becomes payable. Ask your accountant how invoices should show tax on the held portion, and confirm which of the Canadian localization's provincial fiscal positions applies to each customer.
T5018 subcontractor reporting
If more than half of your business income comes from construction, the CRA requires T5018 slips for Canadian resident subcontractors paid more than $500, before GST/HST, for construction services in the reporting period. Mark subcontractor vendors and construction service products in Odoo from the first day, so each subcontractor's payments for the period come out of one report.
WCB clearance letters in Alberta
WCB-Alberta advises getting a clearance letter before a subcontractor starts, during the contract and before final payment. If you pay a subcontractor who has an outstanding WCB balance, you can become responsible for those premiums. A Documents request with a due date, assigned to whoever runs payables, leaves a visible placeholder until the current letter is uploaded.
