Retail and ecommerce ERP for stores, inventory, and accounting
Retail and ecommerce operations need product, price, customer, order, inventory, fulfilment, return, payment, tax, and accounting records to agree across every selling channel. Odoo ERP can be evaluated as the operating core while storefronts, marketplaces, payment providers, and shipping tools keep their defined roles. The right architecture depends on channel ownership and transaction volume. Standard connectors and Odoo configuration should be tested before custom synchronization logic is approved.
Product and channel governance
Define the system of record for products, variants, barcodes, prices, promotions, images, taxes, and availability before deciding which channel may create or change each field.
Orders, payments, and fulfilment
Test store and online orders, payment status, fraud or exception holds, picking, shipping, pickup, delivery updates, fees, and settlement reconciliation end to end.
Inventory across stores and warehouses
Validate on-hand and available stock, transfers, replenishment, reservations, cycle counts, damaged goods, safety stock, and channel allocation across physical locations.
Returns, refunds, and financial close
Connect return authorization, receipt, exchange or refund, restocking, write-off, tax adjustment, payment-provider settlement, and accounting entries so exceptions close cleanly.
A retail ERP demonstration should include a normal sale, partial fulfilment, return, refund, inventory discrepancy, and payment settlement. Those scenarios expose ownership gaps before they become daily reconciliation work.
Retail and ecommerce workflows to test in Odoo 20
Run each workflow in a test database with your own products and the staff who will use it. The last column is the result to check.
| Workflow | Odoo 20 feature to test | What proves it works |
|---|---|---|
| Opening and closing a till | Opening Control, Cash In/Out with a reason, coin and bill count at Close Register, and Set Maximum Difference | A till short beyond the authorized difference needs a manager to close, and accepted differences post to the cash difference journal. |
| Selling sizes and colours | Product variants from attributes, with a barcode on each variant | Scanning a shirt at the till adds the exact size and colour, and the Free To Use count shown is for that variant. |
| Online orders against real stock | eCommerce Inventory Defaults with Continue Selling switched off, Show Available Quantity, and Click & Collect pickup by store | A sold-out item cannot be ordered online, and a pickup order shows the chosen store's stock. |
| Card payments at the till | Payment terminal integration with a documented provider such as Adyen or Stripe, once the provider confirms Canadian coverage | A card sale validates in the register on its own, and a card refund runs through the same provider's terminal that took the payment. |
| Returns, refunds, and gift cards | Point of Sale refunds, refunds to a gift card, gift card and eWallet programs, and Allow Spontaneous Returns for online orders | Each return creates a credit note referencing the original receipt or invoice, and a gift card issued in store can pay for an online order. |
| Restocking stores from a central warehouse | Inter-warehouse replenishment with Resupply From and reordering rules | A store falling below its minimum creates a delivery from the central warehouse and a receipt at the store, with goods shown in transit. |
Canadian retail details to settle before go-live
Each of these changes tax, language, or consent settings in Odoo, so confirm how it applies to your business with your accountant or lawyer before configuration is signed off.
Sales tax follows the delivery province
For GST/HST, goods are generally supplied in the province where you deliver them, and goods you ship by carrier are treated as delivered at the destination. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba can also require sellers based elsewhere in Canada to register and collect their provincial tax. Odoo's Canadian localization includes a fiscal position for each province; test a shipped order to every province you serve.
Ontario point-of-sale rebates
Ontario rebates the 8% provincial part of the HST at the till on items including books, children's clothing and footwear, children's car seats, and diapers, so the shopper pays the 5% federal part. Odoo applies the sales tax set on each product, so qualifying items need their own tax. Ask your accountant which SKUs qualify, since children's sizes have limits.
French for Quebec shoppers
Quebec's Charter of the French Language requires information on a product, its packaging, and documents that accompany it to be in French, and commercial publications such as websites to be drafted in French. If you sell into Quebec, add French to Odoo, translate product names, variant names, and eCommerce descriptions, and check the language your invoices and receipts print in.
Email consent at the till and checkout
Canada's anti-spam legislation requires a positive opt-in for express consent. The CRTC does not accept a pre-checked box as express consent, and consent has to be requested separately from the terms of sale. Keep the newsletter sign-up as its own unticked choice, and confirm that Odoo Email Marketing records the subscription and unsubscription dates on each contact.
